Thousands of UNITE HERE Marriott Hotel Workers On Strike Across America

After One Week of Frantic Negotiations to Avoid Marriott Strikes Authorized by 8,300 Workers in September, Marriott Workers Strike in Multiple Cities as Employer Fails to Move on Key Issues Follow on twitter at: #MarriottStrike #1Job San Francisco, CA – More than 4,000 Marriott International hotel workers represented by UNITE HERE have shut down the tourism industries of two major American cities in what may quickly become the largest multi-city hotel worker strike ever. Thousands of UNITE HERE Marriott workers in San Francisco struck on October 4, 2018, joining UNITE HERE Marriott workers in Boston who walked out on strike the day before. More cities may join the strikes at any moment: 8,300 UNITE HERE Marriott workers have authorized strikes across 9 different U.S. tourism destinations that may begin at any time. “More than four thousand UNITE HERE workers are on strike against the richest, biggest, and most powerful hotel company in the world to change the hospitality industry into a place where workers can still achieve the American dream,” said D. Taylor, International President of UNITE HERE. “For too long, Marriott workers have struggled to get by, forced to work multiple jobs, sustaining workplace injuries, and having their hours cut, just to get by. Today, thousands of UNITE HERE workers are in the streets striking Marriott across the country because UNITE HERE workers believe one job should be enough to live on!” Union contracts for more than half a dozen UNITE HERE affiliates have expired in the past year, and after months of negotiations where Marriott failed to make significant progress on multiple key issues, 8,300 Marriott workers authorized strikes of nine tourism destinations two weeks ago. After the strike authorizations, UNITE HERE returned to the table and worked in earnest to come to an agreement but the employer failed to make adequate movement on workplace safety around the so-called ‘Green Choice’ program, economics that make one job enough for workers to support their families on, and basic job security regarding automation. In the coming days, more cities will be joining the Marriott strikes. UNITE HERE represents 270,000 members working in the hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation, and airport industries in the U.S. and Canada.

Marriott is the largest and richest hotel company on the planet, earning $22.9 billion in revenue in 2017. Marriott is not the only hotel company that profits from providing jobs that are not enough to live on, but they are uniquely positioned to lead.
|
|
Marriott has more employees than any hotel company – and more than Facebook, American airlines, Microsoft, or Boeing. (annual reports) As the largest hotel employer in the world, Marriott can set the standard in the hotel industry.
Marriott has more rooms than any hotel company on earth – 1.2 million (Year-end 2017 numbers, source 10ks for each company) Marriott has more than 6,500 properties worldwide and is growing fast, opening a new hotel every 18 hours in 2017.
Marriott is worth more than any hotel on earth – roughly 2x as much as Hilton (Google finance. As of June 22, 2018.) Marriott is more than big enough to provide jobs that are enough to live on. We are calling on Marriott: make one job at Marriott enough to live on.
